We have been asked to join with the Dry Stone Wallers to put on some guided walks for the general public in the summer.     Kirklees council will publicise these walks in the usual way, through the "What's On" magazine and other publicity.     Dates are as follows:

Meet at the Railway Station, Marsden, for a guided walk of about 2 miles to look at local rock types and features, led by Alison Quarterman from the Huddersfield Geology Group.

Saturday 19th August 13.30 to 16.30 - Dry Stone Walls in the Landscape

Meet at the Railway Station, Marsden, for a guided walk to look at dry stone walls around Marsden, led by the Dry Stone Walling Association (West Yorkshire Branch).

Castle Hill Geology Leaflet

The West Yorkshire RIGS (Regionally Important Geological and Geomorphological Sites) Group is delighted to announce that the Castle Hill leaflet will be printed in the next two weeks.     Copies will be available for purchase (£1.50) during the March field trip and at the April meeting.     Sheila and Harold Dyson have organised the waymarking of the two geological trails around Castle Hill and this is now complete.     We hope to launch the leaflet sometime in the spring in association with Julian Brown of Castle Hill.     There will be several opportunities to go round the trails with Sheila and Harold during May, as part of Yorkshire Geology Month.

Cow and Calf Rocks and the Moors South of Ilkley

On Sunday 5th March, eight of the group had a very interesting walk over the moors south of Ilkley starting at the Cow and Calf rocks, to look at sandstone and shale features, and the glacial and post-glacial landforms.     This trip was led by Neil Aitkenhead of the Leeds Geological Association.     The group discussed the nature of the Lanshaw Delves moraine that wanders across the moors crossing the watersheds of the Aire and Wharfe.     They were most impressed by the tidal layers in the shale below the Addingham Edge Rock, which suggest very regular sedimentation in a short time period.     In spite of the raw weather with drifts of snow, everyone had a stimulating and enjoyable day.
