Happy New Year

A very Happy New Year to all our members

Following the A.G.M in December it was decided to have two new committee posts:

Programme Secretary
We have about 14 field trips and indoor meetings per year, currently organised by the chairman.     More ideas and help in contacting field trip leaders and people who are willing to give talks would be welcomed.
It would be expected that the programme secretary and chairman would work together to plan the 2006 - 2007 programme, with the planning process starting in the early summer.

Vice - Chairman
Most societies have a vice-chairman to share in the organising of meetings.     Would anyone like to participate more actively in the running of evening meetings and field trips?
The chairman would welcome some help and the members might like to see a new face from time to time.

Yorkshire Geology Month

Many exciting geology events will take place throughout Yorkshire this May and early June, as happened in 2005.     There will be talks and field trips all over the county and we will give detailed information when we have it.
The Huddersfield Geology Group has been asked to give some help again this year.     Last year we took five field trips and Alison gave a talk on the geology of this area.     Most of these events were well attended, though the weather was a significant factor.     We hope to give much the same programme this year but would welcome any additions.     Would you like to take a short walk around an area that you know and explain its rocks and landscapes?
If you have any ideas on extending the programme we offer to the general public, please let Alison know.

Forthcoming Events

Contact Alison for more details, by email or phone 01484 608004.

Sunday 26th February
Geology and glaciation around Ilkley Moor : Neil Aitkenhead PhD

Meeting at: Cow and Calf Rocks (SE 131 467) about 1 mile south-east of Ilkley town centre at 10am.     There is a free car park but no toilets.     Participants are strongly advised to carry a packed lunch and to wear suitable footwear for rough moorland walking over a distance of about 7km (4.3 miles).     Hardhats are desirable for those who may wish to make a close inspection of cliff faces.
Ilkley Moor is formed by the outcrop of rocks of the Millstone Grit Group, here of Kinderscoutian to Yeadonian (R1c to G1b zones) age (Waters, 2000: Stephens et al. 1953).     Particular attention will be paid to an evenly laminated fine-grained sandstone and siltstone facies of probable tidal origin (Aitkenhead & Riley, 1996).     This immediately underlies the Addingham Edge Grit, the lowest sandstone in the local R1c succession and a probable incised valley infill, well exposed at the Cow and Calf Rocks RIGS site.    From this locality, we will walk over the moor to another RIGS site, the Lanshaw Delves Moraine, tracing it for some 3.5km to Reva Reservoir where it is revealed in cross section.     We will also examine some mysterious markings known as Cup & Ring thought to be of Neolithic origin.
