Stones of the Town

Alison is taking a short walk (approx one hour) around the centre of Huddersfield on Sunday 9th May as part of the Active Outdoor Festival run by Kirklees Culture and Leisure Services.    The group will meet at 12.00 in Market Place.     We will look at sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks and see how different stones are used for construction work and for decorative cladding.

Fossil Fossick in the Jet Rock and Grey Shales of Port Mulgrave, North Yorkshire

Ten of the group met John Pratt to have a potter around Port Mulgrave on a rainy day in March.     John had talked to the group about ammonites on the Yorkshire coast in November, so it was good to see why he is so enthusiastic about collecting and preparing ammonites.     In spite of rain and mud we enjoyed fossicking on the pebble beaches, finding many parts of ammonites and belemnites and looking for the prized nodules, which when cracked open carefully may reveal good specimens.     Geologists were impressed with the use of different ammonite species as zone fossils, thus allowing correlation of rather uniform shales all along the wave-cut platform.

John took the group to visit Mike Marshall, who is a professional preparator of fossils he finds along the coast, including ichthyosaurs and fish fossils for museums.     He explained how he selects potential specimens and then how he prepares them in his little workshop close to the coast.

Programme for 2004-2005

Julie and Alison are beginning to sort out next year's programme of events.     We have had many offers of evening talks so we can look forward to a great variety of subjects, on the geology of places such as Greenland, Jersey and Western Ireland, to the mass extinction at the Permo-Triassic boundary and the archaeological site at Myers Wood, near Kirkburton.

However we are short of ideas for field trips, though a weekend in the lead-mining area of Alston, North Yorkshire, has been proposed.     Please let us know where you would like to explore and we will try to suit your demands. Any suggestions to Julie or Alison, please.
