Increase in cost of meetings

At the AGM in December it was decided to put meeting subscriptions up to £1.00 as the present 50p is not covering the cost of the room hire and refreshments.     £1.00 still compares favourably with other groups and societies and you still get delicious cake included!

Reprint of "Rocks and Landscapes of Huddersfield"

Another 500 copies of "Rocks and Landscapes of Huddersfield" have been printed because we have completely sold out and orders continue to come in steadily.     The price has been raised to £4.50 to cover the cost of reprinting.

There are plenty of copies of the "Building Stones of Huddersfield" book still available at £2.00.

If you would like a copy of either, or know of any outlets where they should be available, please let Alison know.

Manchester Geological Society

Saturday 17th January 2004 - 14:00 to 16:30
In the large lecture theatre of the Williamson Building,
University of Manchester.
  • Dr. Jamie Gilmour, University of Manchester:
The Terrestrial Planets - Is the Earth Special?

An investigation of the extent to which the requirement for a stable climate that can support life has selected the geological environment that human beings observe around them.     Comparisons with the geology of the other terrestrial planets will be used to illustrate the underlying idea.

  • The Exploration of Mars.
It's easy to forget in the light of recent successes in Mars Exploration that its surface was essentially unknown as little as forty years ago.     Our present understanding of Martian geology will be presented as it has evolved through exploration since the dawn of the space age.     Where possible, reference will be made to the missions scheduled to arrive in the days before the meeting.
