May Fieldtrip - Coal Mines around Jackson Bridge
Ten members of the group met at New Mill church, in May, for a short
walk around New Mill and Jackson Bridge, to look at what remains of
coal-mining activity in the Lower Coal Measures.
There are many signs of mining if you know what to look for,
even in an area which has not been mined for the last fifty years.
Clues from mine plans and old maps mean that adits, shafts,
opencast mines and shale tips can be identified.
Talking to local people who remember when private mines were
open before coal industry nationalisation in 1947 has been a
good way to discover anecdotal information which brings
the subject to life.
June Meeting - What Building Stone Where?
This meeting was a light-hearted and non-competitive
look at the use of building stones from around Britain.
As many of the photos were taken on Huddersfield Geology Group
field trips, some people recognised themselves in pictures of
Nottingham and the Huddersfield area.
Local Geology
Two members of the group have been out on a field day
with Ian Chisholm, lately of British Geological Society, who carried
out the geological mapping for some of the Huddersfield district,
and is now mapping the Holme Valley and Penistone
area of the Glossop geology sheet.
He is taking a field trip in May 2004 and wanted to show us some
new ideas about faults and folds in the Shepley and New Mill areas.
