Geologist Association Reunion
Four of the group attended the GA Annual Reunion, held for the first time
out of London. The event consisted of group displays, commercial exhibits
and lectures based at the Liverpool University department of Earth Sciences.
The Huddersfield Geology Group display was very well received with lots
of positive comments and
we came across as an active group compared to many others. On Sunday
various fieldtrips were organised, we attended the one about the sea
defences along the Wirral coast which was very informative if a little
windy!

Sunday 14th October
This was a very interesting fieldtrip. We visited an exposure of the
Chester Pebble Beds on the banks of the River Mersey at Job's Ferry
which were formed during the early stages of rifting that eventually
led to the formation of the North Atlantic. Later locations included the
Wilmslow and Helsby desert sandstones with faulting and dinosaur
footprints as promised!

GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY AWARDJulie is to be congratulated on gaining the top mark for Geology A-level for the AQA exam board. The Geological Society offers a book prize to the student with the highest mark, as well as a donation of library books to the school where the exams were taken, which in Julie's case was Greenhead College. Alison was given membership of the Geological Society for a year as her teacher. Well done to both Julie and Alison! |
Forthcoming Events22nd November - Leeds Geological Association The El Salvador Earthquakes of January & February 2001.

Monday 18th February 2002
There is little demand for this trip so far. We must have at least 6 to 8 people to make it worth BGS arranging a visit during the afternoon. Please let Alison know if you can commit yourself to this visit or we will have to cancel it in December if there is not a large enough group. Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th February 2002
A weekend of Shropshire geology staying at the Bridges Youth Hostel on the Longmynd. Cost is £39.20 full board with transport shared amongst the group. Saturday 6th-13th April 2002
A self-catering lodge is booked for those who have paid a deposit. It is situated near Forres, which is 25 miles east of Inverness, in woodland, and close to sea, sand-dunes and cliffs. Local rocks are Triassic sandstones - metamorphic rocks are found to the east along the Buchan coast. There will be plenty of rocks, minerals and fossils to look at and interesting places to visit. There are still a few places left. The full cost will be about £170 for the week to include travel and accommodation. Bring cheques as a deposit of £50 made out to Huddersfield Geology Group and give to Alison as soon as possible. Earth Alert 2 - Scarborough August Bank Holiday 2002 Advanced booking is essential. |
