Johnston Wellfield Quarry Information Board

The Crosland Hill information board has now been completed and declared open in a glittering ceremony with the Examiner on hand to record the event. The board can be seen in the observation site overlooking Moorfield Quarry on Sands Lane. Many thanks to all who contributed.

GA Festival - Earth Science Fair
Liverpool University 2nd-4th November 2001

This is the Annual Geologists' Association Event held for the first time outside London. The Huddersfield Geology Group are now affiliated to the Geologists' Association and can attend as exhibitors and/or delegates. There is no cost to attend.
An outline programme is printed below.

Liverpool University Department of Earth Sciences Open Day
Staff from the department will be on hand to lead groups on several tours of the department. There will be an opportunity to examine exhibits associated with teaching and research activities as well as smaller group tours to see specialist items of equipment such as the supercomputer, stable isotope facility, scanning electron microscope and mass spectrometer facilities.

Field Excursion Programme
There will be a choice of 4 field trips:
1. "Rock around Liverpool" = a geological guide to the building stones of the City centre.
2. "Engineering geology and environmental impact" = a visit to the sea defences of the north Wirral coast and beach walk.
3. A visit to the Triassic sandstones at Thurstaton to examine the Sherwood Sandstone Group which form the petroleum reservoir rocks of the eastern Irish Sea Basin.
4. Quaternary glacial geology in the Dee estuary - beach walk.

Leeds University School of Continuing Education offer many part time courses for adults.

The geological courses on offer this year are:

The Geological Development of Northern England
Volcanoes - Windows to the Living Planet

Forthcoming Events

Sunday 16th September

The first fieldtrip of the new programme is to study the Building Stones of Sheffield using the recently published guide by Peter Kennett. Meet at Meadowhall in the Green Car Park on the top level next to staircase 40 next to NEXT (the shop) at 12 noon (sounds like a spy film!). We should finish about 16:00.

Monday 8th October at Greenhead College in Room F9 at 7.15pm

The next evening meeting is an illustrated talk by Brian Farrington on Johnson Wellfield Quarry. This will be followed by a brief AGM.

Saturday 6th to Saturday 13th April 2002

A week of interesting fieldwork and much merriment on the Banff coast near Aberdeen. The cost will be approx £160.00 on a self catering basis. Travel will be by mini bus and rail.
