Features - Castle Hill. The Millennium View

When you stand on the summit of Castle Hill, near the Victoria Tower and gaze at the Pennine Panorama in front of you, think of the past 350 thousand millennia. This is the time that has elapsed since the rocks which make today's landscape were formed and each passing millennium has played its part in sculpting today's special view.

Huddersfield Geology Group are anxious to help interpret our Pennine landscape for the visitors to Castle Hill. How were the sandstones and mudstones formed? Where was coal mined? Why does Castle Hill dominate the landscape? What has the human impact been over the last few millennia?

To answer some of these questions we need site boards, displays, themed walks and a centre for people to study the view and the information which can be made available. We want to help to conserve our heritage and stop the neglect which has taken place in the past. The proposed improvements will help everyone, they will take pressure away from the hill top, landscape the parking and information area and restore the tower with funding for more adequate management in the future.
